The levels of effectiveness decreased in treating advanced stage of baldness when there is a already large area of hair loss or baldness. It is also not effective for sudden/patchy hair loss, unexplained hair loss, or hair loss after giving birth for woman.

The Advantage

It’s very effective for young men.  Man in his twenties has the best chances of responding to minoxidil as a therapy, and very easy to obtain at local drugstore and It’s over-the-counter because doctor’s prescription is not necessary although some doctors recommend consulting doctor or dermatologist before starting treatment.

To achieve high effectiveness, sometimes minoxidil is prescribed along with the other medication for androgenetic alopecia: finasteride (Propecia) or saw palmetto.

Application

Minoxidil needs to be applied twice daily and should be in contact with the scalp for at least 4 hours. Clean and dry the scalp area before applying the treatment and try not to wear a hat or lying on the bed in order to prevent the elimination of minoxidil in the scalp.

Minoxidil shouldn’t  not be used for people who 18 years old or younger, because at this age, usually baldness occurs only temporarily and does not need to be treated.

Long Term Use

Minoxidil does not reduce the dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the enzyme responsible of hair loss, it must be used continuously to maintain the existing hair follicles and retain the hair regrowth process. The treatment is for long term use, if you stop using the treatment, previous hair loss will occur or even is more regressive than before.

When treatment is stopped, the DHT effect will shrink the hair follicle and destroying the hair that grow back by minoxidil.  Any improvement that derived from the treatment will be reversed.
